Installing Windows 10 on Mac via Bootcamp: A Complete Tutorial

Note: Boot Camp is not supported on these devices: MacBook Air M1, 2020 / MacBook Pro 13', M1, 2020 / Mac mini M1, 2020 / iMac 24-inch, M1, 2021, and any Apple devices with an M1 chip.

To verify if you can install Windows 10, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Apple logo in the menu bar.
  2. Select About this Mac to check your system information.
Note: For Intel-based Macs, it will show 'Processor.' For Apple silicon Macs, it will show 'Chip.'

Proceed with the following steps:

Check for software updates.

Note: Before installing Windows, ensure all macOS updates are installed.
  1. Open the Apple menu at the top left and select System Preferences.
  2. Click Software Update.
  3. If no updates are available, a message will state that your system is up to date.
Note: The system will automatically search for updates. Wait a few seconds for the search to complete. If updates are found, click Update now and follow the instructions to install them.
Note: If the Mac restarts after an update, reopen Software Update to check for additional updates.

Prepare your Mac for Windows installation

Boot Camp Assistant prepares your Mac by creating a BOOTCAMP partition and downloading the necessary support software.

Note: If using a MacBook, ensure it is connected to power before proceeding.
  1. Insert your USB drive into the Mac and type Boot Camp in the top left search bar.
  2. Open Boot Camp Assistant > Applications > Utilities.
  3. Click Continue on the introduction screen.
  4. Select all options and click Continue.
  5. Choose the Windows 10 .iso file you downloaded and the USB drive for the installation file.
  6. Decide the partition size for Windows by dragging the slider and click Install.
  7. Note: Partition size cannot be adjusted later.
  8. Your Mac will restart to begin Windows 10 installation.

Install Boot Camp in Windows

After installing Windows, Boot Camp drivers will be installed automatically.

  1. Follow the on-screen instructions in the Boot Camp installer.
  2. Note: Do not click the Cancel button on any installer panels.
    Note: If prompted that the software has not passed the Windows logo test, click Continue.
    Note: Ignore brief installer dialog boxes, but if asked to install device software, click Install. Check for hidden windows if nothing happens.
  3. Click Finish when the installation completes.
  4. After your device restarts, follow any additional installation prompts.
